CHAPTER 30

“What the hell is Lucious Malevont’s Eye?” Ivan demanded, his hands shaking as he turned off the car’s ignition. “Who the hell is Gavriil Alexeev?”

Both had chosen silence during the drive to Ivan’s lair, and perhaps that had been wise. He would have found provocation in anything she said… God knew he’d held his tongue for fear of saying something he might have regretted later on.

“Well?” Ivan pressed, facing her.

Alisa huffed, annoyed. “It’s nothing,” she said, opening the door. “He’s no one.” She tossed back her pitch-black hair with a flick of her hand and stepped out of the car. Her absolute indolence only raised Ivan’s fury even more.

He got out of the car and slammed the door shut, following her down the cobblestone path that led to the backdoor. “It’s always nothing but lies with you!” he spat, furious at himself for allowing her to drag him into her troubles.

She stopped a few feet from reaching the entrance.

“I did not lie,” she said without turning. Her nonchalant tone burned every nervous fiber in Ivan’s being. “I simply chose to keep certain details from you to spare you any grief.”

Ivan’s jaw tightened. The muscles in his neck tensed all the way to his back. He pursed his lips, then took a deep breath to soothe his temper, but it helped very little.

“Do you have any idea of the kind of trouble we’re in?” he hissed in her ear, seizing her elbow. Alisa inevitably turned. “Every warlock in the city will be after our heads now… So when I ask you a question, I expect you give me a truthful answer!”

“Is everything all right?” a voice said.

Ivan closed his eyes, silently thanking any and all higher powers that his maker was home, ready to prevent him from doing anything stupid.

“We’ve just killed a couple of warlocks,” Ivan jeered. “And by doing so, we’ve unleashed the greatest war there’s ever been between vampires and shifters.” He paused. “But other than that, everything’s just peachy! Thanks for asking, Dristan.” Ivan patted his maker’s shoulder and trudged into the house.

“Alisa,” Dristan said, acknowledging her presence with a quick nod.

“Dristan,” she replied, mimicking Ivan’s maker as she moved past him.

“Is there something I should know?” Dristan asked, following them into the parlor. He stopped behind the sofa, casually leaning his weight against the furniture’s back. Sleeves rolled up to his elbows, a vivid gleam in his hazel eyes… Dristan had fed recently.

“You might as well stay,” Alisa said in a mellow tone. She gave Dristan a side glance as she moved around him and then dropped on the sofa.

“I want to know everything, Alisa,” Ivan said. “And when I say everything, I mean every single detail… No more lies!” His fury was impossible to restrain, especially when every second reminded him of their exposure to the Ursa’s thirst for vengeance.

Although exhausted and desperately in need of sitting on the chair by the hearth, Ivan couldn’t stay still. “I knew it!” he muttered, pacing the room.
